I was the same way till I found these great candles. They burn cleaner, cooler, which means you get LESS soot around the top of the jar. That is 90% - no ugly black soot. The scents are so much stronger that when you light it the last time, it's scent is as strong as it was when you got it home.

I found this information on Yahoo while searching for the reason most candles make the jars black as you burn them. You do not see this when burning votives or tea lights, but they are sending the soot into the air. So I thought I would share this with you. To read the entire article, you can go to the link below. SOY CANDLES benefits over traditional wax candles.
They say soy candles last 50% longer than candles made of petroleum-based paraffin, the ingredient found in most candles. They say they also burn slower and cooler (helping to better distribute fragrance), are non-toxic, clean up with soap and water, and produce very little soot. These factors tend to make soy candles more animal and child-friendly than traditional candles. Soy wax is also a favorite of environmentally conscious consumers. Soy is from soybeans, it is biodegradable, and a renewable resource.
Paraffin wax, on the other hand, is made from petroleum and produces carcinogens and soot when burned. This is what your traditional candles are made with. This is what causes the soot around the candle jar, and is also going into the air in your home that you breathe.

The blue candle has never been burned.
The red candle has been burned many times, and I have yet had to clean any soot off the jar. When they cool down, they still look new.
